Quick checks

  • Try a different USB port — preferably a rear motherboard port, not a front panel port.
  • Try the device on another computer to rule out device failure.
  • Try a different cable if applicable.

Reset USB controllers

Device Manager → Universal Serial Bus controllers → right-click each USB Root Hub → Uninstall. Reboot. Windows reinstalls them.

Disable USB selective suspend

Control Panel → Power Options → Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings → USB settings → USB selective suspend → Disabled.

Update chipset drivers

Download Intel DSA (Driver & Support Assistant) or AMD Chipset Software and run it. Outdated chipset drivers cause USB recognition failures.

Check power delivery

Powered USB hubs fix issues with high-draw devices (external HDDs, large USB SSDs). Plug directly into the PC to rule out hub power issues.
