What the click of death means
Clicking indicates the read/write heads are failing to find their home position, often due to head crash, platter damage, or failed head assembly. Stop using the drive immediately.
What NOT to do
- Do not run chkdsk — it causes excessive write cycles and can make things worse.
- Do not freeze the drive — this is a myth that causes condensation damage.
- Do not open the drive outside a cleanroom — even household dust will destroy platters.
DIY attempts
If data is not critical: connect via USB, run Recuva or TestDisk and recover what you can before the drive fails completely. Work fast.
Professional recovery
DriveSavers, Ontrack, and Secure Data Recovery are reputable. Expect $300–$1,500 depending on damage. Success rate on clicking drives is 70–85% at professional labs.
